- You need to show it in a place where you won't have Internet access.
- Your classroom has really slow Internet access.
- You want a part of the video, not all of it.
- You want a copy just in case it disappears from YouTube
Perceived Ease of Use
This tool is so easy to use. Copy and paste the link to the video you want to download into the field on KeepVid and press the large download button.
If you get asked about an "applet" go ahead and check the "Allow all applets..." box and click the allow button.
If everything is working correctly, you should be presented with a list that contains links to your video. Personally, I typically download the MP4 version in the best available resolution (bigger numbers).
That's it. You can now store the video away in your Dropbox account or anywhere else for safe keeping and viewing.

Perceived Usefulness
If you've ever needed a video from YouTube this will be useful to you.
Pros
- Works well on both Macs and Windows.
- Totally web-based... nothing to install.
- Free.
- Fast (most of the time).
- The bookmarklet makes it even easier to use.
- Works with many other popular video sites.
Cons
- Lots of advertising (be careful to avoid all the bogus "Download" and "Watch Now" buttons).
- Sometimes it doesn't work (although I will say I have much better success with the bookmarklet)
Final Thoughts
There are other ways to get video from YouTube, I used to be very partial to VideoDownloadHelper on Firefox, but for pure ease of use (especially with the bookmarklet), this is my first choice for downloading videos.
Tips & Tricks
*Now I'm no lawyer, but if you don't own the copyright you shouldn't do this, right? Check the copyright laws and how they might apply to your situation. Just saying.
- If it doesn't work as advertise, be patient then click the refresh button
- The bookmarklet is key... install it!
- MP4 will play on just about anything

Really nice post.
ReplyDeleteThe downside of this it's that if you need to convert the video you need to use a software.
I've found this software which will download and convert the videos
http://www.freedownloadyoutubedownloader.com
It can also download whole YouTube playlists.
What about the fact that downloading a video from Youtube breaches the terms of use that you agree to when log in to Youtube. While I fully understand why you would do this (as per your first section) it's not just about copyright. However I have done it myself on odd occasions but where I do have good internet I always link to Youtube rather than download. BTW if you want to show just part of a Youtube TubeChop http://www.tubechop.com/ lets you chop part of a Youtube clip and share just that bit from a unique URL.
ReplyDeleteStephen,
DeleteThanks for your comments. You make some excellent points. Chief among these is that we shouldn't download YT videos simply because we can. There should be a compelling reason (i.e. not Internet access). I didn't realize I was violating the terms of use (mostly b/c I haven't read the terms of use) so thanks for pointing that out :-)
TubeChop is a good resource and worth mentioning!

ReplyDeletehey,
ReplyDeleteThough downloading YouTube videos is not legal & it's not permitted by YouTube but If you and I were producers,we can allow YouTube downloading only if intended for fair use. Also you gonna find many youtube videos which is under creative common license and reuse is permitted. So you can download those kind of videos and also reuse it.
You can follow the above method for downloading videos or here is the youtube downloader which I follow
YouTube doesn't allow downloading their videos because they want their visitors to visit their website again and again, so that they can charge their advertisers for displaying relevant ads on them. You recommended using DAP but It doesn't give you option to download videos in mp3. Here is the free youtube to mp3 converter which works perfectly me.
